Mission:

The mission of Lionsgate Academy is to provide a transition-oriented and personalized learning program focused on secondary (grades 7-12) higher-functioning students on the autism spectrum that supports their full potential, participation, and self-determination within their school, family, and community.

To this end, Lionsgate Academy will create an educational environment that will model best instructional practice and research-based techniques so that the graduates will--to the fullest extent possible--live independently, be involved in further education or gainful employment, and develop meaningful relationships with others.

The founding board envisions Lionsgate Academy as:

  • The only secondary school in Minnesota with a particular focus on designing appropriate learning programs for children with autism. Lionsgate will function as a working laboratory for new methods and educational approaches for Autism Spectrum Disorders, featuring research-based educational techniques particularly suited for children with Asperger’s Syndrome, High Functioning Autism, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder.
  • A free public school funded by state and federal monies as well as through philanthropy. In addition, local school districts will reimburse the school for special needs services.
  • Governed by parents, educators and other concerned professionals.
  • Located in Crystal, MN (western suburb of Twin Cities). Lionsgate will initially serve approximately 60 students in grades 7-10. It will expand a grade a year through grade 12 and support a transition program for students up to 21 years of age if needed.
  • Operated on a year-round academic school calendar.
  • Providing every student with an individual education plan (IEP) or individual learning plan (ILP) in which individual goals will be assessed and revised on a continual basis.
  • Focused on data-driven analysis and ongoing assessments of both its students and program, using best practice and research-proven teaching methods to best respond to student needs.
  • Offering full-day educational and therapeutic services while meeting all state academic requirements for graduation.
  • Providing a transition program for post-secondary education or employment after high school.
  • Encouraging high family involvement at every level, including governance, classroom, programming decisions, and ongoing volunteering.
  • Serving as a much-needed laboratory and training center to develop the most effective strategies for educating the thousands of students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Minnesota.
