Introduce Haiku Poem
Class will write one together
Students will write one for homework
Thursday/Friday 4th/5th
Discuss synonyms/Practice with synonyms
Introduce Cinquain Poem
Write one as a class
Students will practice 1-3 for homework
Monday/Tuesday 8th/9th
Introduce Concrete Poems
Class will create a concrete poem on their own
Thursday/Friday 11th/12th
Introduce ABC Poem
Class will start one together
Students will work on their poems
Read different poems from the text book
Monday/Tuesday 15/16th
No School
Thursday/Friday 18th/19th
Introduce Couplet Poem-Rhyming Poem
Class will write one together
Students will have the choice to either write 2 poems with 10 lines each, or 1 poem with 20 lines
Monday/Tuesday 22nd/23rd
Students will have a practice/make up day that will include all poems that we have covered in the poetry unit
Thursday/Friday 25th/26th
Students will read a short story by Barabara Jordan, All Together Now
Class will discuss Black History Month
Students will work on vocabulary words from the story
There will be comprehension questions at the end of the story for students to complete
Students will listen and read along with a poem by Shel Silverstein

Introduction to persuasive writing
Students will read a sample persuasive paper
Students receive topic possibilities to write their paper on
Students receive the first paragraph graphic organizer
Discuss Thesis statement
Students work on organizer
Thursday/Friday 4th/5th
Students are given a 2nd organizer
Students work out their thoughts for their 2nd paragraph of paper
Monday/Tuesday 8th/9th
Students work on 3rd paragraph graphic organizer
Students read more samples of persuasive papers
Thursday/Friday 11th/12th
Students work on 4th paragraph graphic organizer
Monday/Tuesday 15th/16th
No school
Thursday/Friday 18th/19th
Students work on last paragraph
Students then start writing/typing up their paper
Monday/Tuesday 22nd/23rd
Students correct each other’s papers
Students start typing final draft
Thursday/Friday 25th/26th
Last day to type their papers
